The day runs anticlockwise up the north-west coast and back. Valldemossa first and longest, then the Son Marroig estate for the view down onto the Sa Foradada headland, then Deià, then Sóller, then two hours at Port de Sóller before the return into Palma. Travel time sits inside the seven hours rather than on top of it, which is the thing worth checking on any full-day tour.
Valldemossa is built in honey-coloured stone and stepped up its hillside, and it is the one Mallorcan village with an international story attached. Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838 in the Carthusian charterhouse at the top of the village; she wrote a book about it afterwards and was not kind about the weather. An hour and twenty minutes is enough to walk the lanes, see the cloister and sit down somewhere, which is more than most day tours allow it.
Twenty minutes at Son Marroig, which is a stop for one thing: the view down onto Sa Foradada, the pierced headland below the estate. Then forty minutes in Deià, smaller and steeper than Valldemossa, where Robert Graves lived from the 1930s and is buried in the churchyard. The road between them is the reason people book a driver rather than a hire car.
An hour in Sóller itself, where Sant Bartomeu church on the main square carries a modernista facade by a pupil of Gaudí, then down to the port for two hours. This is the part to read carefully: the tram between Sóller and Port de Sóller is not in the fare. It costs €10 per direction, paid to the railway, and the tour excludes exactly that figure. If riding the tram matters to you, budget for it; if the 1912 train from Palma matters more, the one-day circuit is the trip that puts train, tram and a boat leg inside a single price.
First-time visitors who want the Serra de Tramuntana without driving its roads, and anyone who would rather be one of eight than one of fifty-five. Reviewers on this trip name the guide in almost every entry, which is what a group of eight buys you. It is also the trip to take if you have no hire car: it leaves from beside Palma Cathedral and returns there.
If what you actually want is the railway and the Sa Calobra road, this is the wrong day. This tour drives the villages; it does not take the 1912 train, it does not descend the Nus de sa Corbata hairpins and it excludes the tram. The one-day sightseeing circuit does all three inside one fare — coach over the mountains, the hairpins to Sa Calobra, a forty-five minute boat and the train back — on a vehicle that seats up to fifty-five. And if you are off a cruise ship, the private shore excursion carries a return-to-ship guarantee that a shared minibus cannot.
