Mallorca Map and Departure Points
This page exists because of one number. Mallorca covers about 3,640 square kilometres, and the trips here leave from points spread right around its coast. Booking a boat out of Cala Figuera while you are staying in Alcúdia means an hour and a half in a car before your departure time — and that is the single most common expensive mistake made here. Distances are the thing people misjudge here, so check where a trip starts before you book: the Mallorca day trips all leave from a named point rather than your hotel door.

The five parts of Mallorca
Palma and the bay
The capital, the cruise berth and four marinas, all within a few minutes of the old town. Most of the trips here start in Palma, and it is the one base from which you can reach the water without a car.
The south-west — Portals, Magaluf, Santa Ponça, Peguera, Andratx
Twenty to forty-five minutes from Palma along the coast. Puerto Portals, Magaluf beach, Santa Ponça and Port d'Andratx between them launch the private charters, the jet boat, the quad tour, the licence-free rental and the self-drive coast road tour.
The north-west — the Serra de Tramuntana
Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and Sa Calobra, reached by mountain road or by the 1912 railway, with Port de Sóller at the foot of the tram line. Nothing launches from here: the day trips drive up from Palma and come back down.
The north — Alcúdia and Pollença
About an hour and a quarter from Palma. The kayaking and sea-cave day runs from here and collects along the Port de Pollença to Can Picafort strip. If you are staying up here, that is the trip that comes to you.
The south-east — Santanyí, Cala Figuera, Manacor's coast
Fifty minutes or so from Palma. The famous coves are here — Caló des Moro, Cala s'Almunia, Cala Màrmols — along with the boat trip that reaches them and the Cova de Coloms sea caving.

Do you need a hire car?
It depends entirely on where you sleep, and the honest answer splits three ways. Staying in Palma: no. Four marinas, the cruise berth and the railway station are all within reach on foot or by bus, and fourteen of these trips start there. Staying in the north or the south-east: probably yes, unless the one trip that collects from your area is the one you want. Staying in the south-west resorts: a car helps, but taxis cover the twenty-minute hops to Portals and Magaluf without much pain.
